The Institute of Hán Nôm Studies was established on the foundation
laid by the Hán-Nôm Department (1970-1979) of the Vietnam Social
Sciences Committee according to Decree No. 326/CP of the Council
of Government on September 13, 1979. It was later reaffirmed as
a division of the National Center for Social Sciences and Humanities
following the government Decree No. 23/CP of May 22, 1993.
The Institute performs multiple functions of collecting, preserving,
restoring, photocopying, translating, researching and publishing
the Hán Nôm heritage of the country. It also trains Hán Nôm researchers,
organizes seminars on Hán Nôm research, and engages in various exchanges
and cooperative activities with institutions of foreign countries.
The Institute is the largest center in the country devoted to preserving
and researching the Hán Nôm heritage. At present, the Institute
of Hán Nôm Studies maintains a holdings of about 20,000 books (including
Nôm books of the Dao, Tày, and other ethnic groups in Vietnam),
and nearly 40,000 paper rubbings from stone steles, bronze bells,
stone gongs and wood plaques (including stele inscriptions left
by the Chăm ethnic group) dating from the Lý Dynasty (10th Century)
to the Nguyễn Dynasty (20th Century). In addition, the Institute
holds more than 15,000 units of wood block printing.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
Presently, the Institute of Hán Nôm Studies has a total staff of
66, including researchers, research assistants and others—among
whom there are one full professor, five associate professors, one
doctorate, fifteen Ph.D.’s, seven masters, twenty-five researchers
and others, organized into the following structures:

FUTURE PLANS
- Developing a sound preservation system for maintaining the Institute’s
current collection of original documents according to traditional
preservation methods.
- Investigating and collecting more Hán Nôm materials.
- Applying information technology to the preservation and research
of the Hán Nôm heritage.
- Conducting research on Hán Nôm materials. This includes doing
research on specialized theoretical issues, introducing specialized
collections, editing reference volumes as well as introducing
major authors.
- Training Hán Nôm researchers.
A GRADUATE TRAINING CENTER
The Institute is also a graduate training center for students specializing
in Hán Nôm research at the master or the doctoral levels. To date
we have trained 15 masters and 13 Ph.D.’s.
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
The Institute enjoys academic cooperative relations with several
research institutions for joint research in lexical studies, Oriental
studies, information technology and preservation, including those
in Russia, France, Japan, China, the United States, Taiwan, Singapore,
Korea, etc.
THE HÁN NÔM REVIEW
The Institute also publishes a bimonthly journal—The Hán Nôm Review,
which provides research information on Hán Nôm studies.
