On the occasion of the 700th founding anniversary of Thuận Hoá–Phú Xuân–Huế and Festival Huế 2006, the International Nôm Conference Organizing Committee invites scholars, researchers, consultants, and other experts to submit original and unpublished works conveying innovations, ideas, software solutions, multidisciplinary problems, position papers, field studies, case studies, etc., in areas of Hán Nôm studies.

The general topic areas of the Conference are:

  1. basic researches in chữ Nôm—history of the origin, formation, and development of chữ Nôm, script type, functions of chữ Nôm, its cultural significance, problems of chữ Nôm text studies, etc.
  2. chữ Nôm researches related to Huế culture, and
  3. problems in the popularization, use, and teaching chữ Nôm. Problems in building a standardized Hán Nôm character repertoire and Hán Nôm electronic web archives.

In addition, a pre-conference Tutorial Day on May 31, 2006 includes training workshops on chữ Nôm calligraphy and IT techniques as support for chữ Nôm research and education projects for the public.

All are invited to organize panels or invited sessions. Panel sessions will include participants from IT, linguistics, and the social sciences as well as chữ Nôm researchers and scholars. Corporations, publishers, archives, museums and libraries are especially invited to participate.

Submitted papers must describe work not previously published. Papers must not be submitted concurrently to another conference with refereed proceedings.

Abstracts and Paper Drafts Submission

  • All submitted papers must have an abstract in English and Vietnamese.
  • Abstracts should be 500 words, submitted together with author’s name, professional address, contact telephone and email, and a short biography.
  • All submissions are to be in both paper and in electronic form, or via email. Contact the Organizing Committee if you need help.
  • Invited Sessions proposals follow the same as abstract and paper submissions. Titles, abstracts and (co)-organizer information should also follow the abstract submission requirements.
  • Software demonstration sessions and publication display proposals should follow the same abstract and paper submission procedures. Titles and organizer information should also follow the abstract submission requirements.

Papers Reviewing And Publication

  • Submitted papers will be reviewed. Accepted papers will be published by means of paper and electronic proceedings. Authors of accepted papers must sign a copyright release form.
  • All submitted papers will use Unicode standard Times New Roman, 12 point, single-spaced.

Important Dates

  • December 15, 2005: Deadline for abstracts and invited session proposals.
  • April 30, 2006: Final paper submission for both individual papers and invited sessions, both hard copies and electronic versions.
  • May 10, 2006: Notifications of Acceptance.
  • May 20, 2006: Final Program Announcement.

Important Information about coming to the Conference

  • Participants to the Conference arrange and pay fheir own transportation and stay during the Conference.
  • The Organizing Committee examines and informs of special travel and room and board grant to certain scholars who are special to the Conference.
  • Because the Conference convenes just before the Festival Huế 2006, participants are advised to arrange hotels early. If you need help, please let us know as soon as possible. See Registration.
