Leaning out, I look down on the valley,
Path winding to a deserted inn,
Thatch roof tattered and decayed.
Bamboo poles on gnarled pilings
Bridge the green stream uncurling
Little tufts in the wavering current.
Happy, I forget old worries.
Someone’s kite is struggling up.
Notes:In the last line, lộn lèo (“a kite’s lead string got twisted”) suggests a famous nói lái: lẹo lồn, which in its reversal of tones holds an obscene meaning.
